The DC/SLA Program Planning Committee has developed a November loaded with learning and networking opportunities in the area (and online). Here’s a list of what’s coming up. Take a look and we hope to see you at some of these!

November 2015 DC/SLA Events

DC/SLA 2016 Board of Directors Candidates Announced!

The DC/SLA Nominations Committee has revealed the slate of candidates for the 2016 DC/SLA Board of Directors. You can learn more about them below.

The vote for Board of Directors will run from September 1 to September 25. We’ll be sending out a link to the online voting system as the election nears – stay tuned!

President Elect – Blane Dessy

Blane Dessy BioBlane K. Dessy is the Deputy Associate Librarian for Planning and Project Management at the Library of Congress. Before this position, he was Executive Director of the Federal Library Network at the Library of Congress in June, 2010. Prior to this, he had been Director of Libraries at the United States Department of Justice (2000-2010) and the first Executive Director of the National Library of Education (1994-2000). He came to the Federal Government after working as a State Librarian (Alabama), Deputy State Librarian (Ohio), library consultant (Oklahoma), and public library director (Pennsylvania).

Mr. Dessy received his MLS degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1976. He has a strong interest in the role of information in the Federal government.

Program Director – Lois Ireland

Lois Ireland BioLois A. Ireland has over 25 years experience in special library management, most of that time spent in the Washington, DC area. At Freddie Mac, her employer of 17 years, Lois has expanded her original position of corporate library manager to a non-traditional hybrid, incorporating multimedia services and department intranet development in addition to library and research services. Prior to Freddie Mac, Lois spent 7 years on contract at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in a variety of leadership positions, mostly as head librarian of the Headquarters Information Resource Center.

A native of Maryland’s Eastern Shore, Lois has a BA in history from Washington College, Chestertown, MD and an MS in LS from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is past president of the Washington DC chapter of SLA (2012).

Sponsor Relations Director – Layla Heimlich

Layla Heimlich BioLayla Voll Heimlich is a medical reference librarian at the Washington Hospital Center, and has been an active member of DC SLA since she moved to DC after graduating from library school in 2007.  She has served the chapter as co-chair of the hospitality committee, chair of the non-fiction book club (for two terms), chair of the elections committee, SLA co-representative to the annual DC-area librarians’ Joint Spring Workshop, and currently serves as the DC SLA Director for Program Planning. At the national level, she has served as a member of the Biomedical Division’s professional development committee and as chair of the Medical Section of the Biomedical Division, where her responsibilities included organizing the section’s annual conference programming. She is also active in the Medical Library Association, most recently as chair of the MLA Hospital Library Section’s strategic planning committee.

Layla received an MLIS from the Pratt Institute in New York, and a BA in modern European History from Harvard University.  Publications and presentations include “New and emerging roles for medical librarians” in the Journal of Hospital Librarianship (2014) and “World Book Night: Connecting librarians and nurses in patient-centered care” (poster, MAC MLA, 2012). Prior to becoming a librarian, she worked in editing and publishing in New York City. She lives in Bethesda with her husband and their four-year-old son.

Recording Secretary – Jack Dale

Jack Dale BioJack Dale is a candidate for Recording Secretary on the 2016 DC/SLA Board. He is interested in serving on the board as a way to give back to the Library and Information Science profession, the Special Libraries Association (SLA), and the SLA’s DC Chapter. Particularly since receiving his MSLIS degree from The Catholic University of America (CUA), Washington, DC, in May 2015, Jack realizes the need to continue growing personally and professionally by deepening his involvement with DC/SLA.

Jack is currently employed at Leidos (formerly SAIC) as a Spanish Linguist, and he lives and works in Northern Virginia. During his free time, Jack volunteers at the Bull Run Regional Library in Manassas, Virginia, assisting with newspaper article indexing in support of the library’s Genealogy and Local History collection. He is also assisting the Syriac Heritage project at CUA on a volunteer basis.

Jocelyn McNamara receives 2015 DC/SLA Annual Conference Stipend

Congratulations to Jocelyn McNamara, 2015 DC/SLA Annual Conference Stipend winner!

The Washington, D.C. Chapter of SLA established the Annual Conference Stipend Award to enable a chapter member to attend the SLA Annual Conference. The award criteria include future professional leadership potential in SLA and the profession, contributions to SLA and the chapter, and financial need. Preference is given to newer members who have already begun to take a leadership role.

Jocelyn is  a new professional who has already been active in SLA, serving as the President of University of Maryland’s SLA chapter during her initial semester as an MLS student. She is currently a metadata librarian at the USDA National Agriculture Library on assignment for LAC Group and a full time grad school student. This will be her first SLA annual conference.

We look forward to seeing Jocelyn at SLA in Boston this summer!
